Florence, or Firenze, was the next port of call. Since the city is so removed from the pier, we signed up for the 'Florence and Pisa - On Your Own' excursion. Our guide on the bus was an Aussie named John who lived in Florence for the past 12 years. He passed on so much great info, and was definitely the best guide of the week.
We read in the 'Idiot Tourist Handbook' that it is imperative to take a photo "holding up" the tower while in Pisa. We all seemed to have gotten to this page in the book because 18 jillion people were all taking pictures in similar poses.
Antonio, who owned the wine store where we had enjoyed our "free" tasting, was really great with Cooper. How did we show our appreciation? We bought a case of wine for $600+ that will be delivered in a few weeks. (it was freakin' amazing wine)
This is the 'fake David' that occupies the original place of the big guy. The real one is in the Academia Museum now, but it was too far away and the lines are too long for us to manage a looksie. So the fake one is satisfactory.
Buying some art in a piazza.
Cooper and Lori feeding some Italian bread to some Italian pigeons.
Florence is a beautiful city, and it was nice to walk around and take in the streets and the people. Maria is still talking about the pasta she had for lunch that day. Best meal she had on the entire trip. Best. Delicious. Lori had to be stopped before she bought a leather coat in one of the shops. Yes, Maria was the "bad guy" in that decision.
Ciao Florence!
